A very profitable failure

What incentive do football managers have to perform well when, like England’s Steve McLaren, you get awarded £2m for failure? OK, so he also got sacked, but that’s just taking away with one hand, whilst giving a very warm ‘golden handshake’ with the other. Why do fans allow this sort of thing?
